Greenlee boasts new splicer, optical fiber cleaver

Greenlee's 910FS Optical Fusion SplicerGreenlee Communications’ new 910FS Optical Fusion Splicer is designed to allow technicians to splice a variety of fiber-optic cables in both indoor and outdoor applications.

The 910FS features changeable adapters that allow changes from 250 μm bare fiber to 900 μm buffer, as well as dual cameras with 240x magnification and a 5.7-inch color LCD screen for clear fiber analysis. SC and LC splice-on connectors are also supported, and advanced auto core alignment technology helps technicians reduce preparation time and yield lower connection losses.

The 910FS comes with 60 preset splice modes, as well as custom user-defined modes, and is capable of storing up to 5,000 splice results.

Greenlee’s 910CL Optical Fiber CleaverAnd Greenlee’s 910CL Optical Fiber Cleaver is a precision optical fiber cleaver that helps cable technicians prepare single- and multi-mode fiber cable for both indoor and outdoor splicing applications.

The 910CL consistently cleaves flat, the company said. The interlocking mechanism also prevents cleaving until proper tensioning is complete.

The 910CL can be paired with the 910FS Optical Fusion Splicer. Cleaved fiber remains in the adapter, and the entire unit can be inserted into the 910FS, reducing damage to the fiber and giving more accurate results, according to Greenlee.

Actiontec launches ScreenBeam wireless kit

Actiontec's ScreenBeamActiontec Electronics has launched ScreenBeam, a wireless display kit that lets users mirror their PC, tablet and smartphone displays on an HDTV.

ScreenBeam is among the first devices approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance for their Wi-Fi-Certified Miracast program, which simplifies discovery and setup in streaming content to TVs.

As a standalone wireless display adapter, ScreenBeam is compatible with a broad range of Miracast-certified sources, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, and devices running Android or WiDi 3.5 and higher. ScreenBeam is also available as a kit, which includes wireless display software and a USB transmitter for Windows 7 and 8 PCs. The ScreenBeam kit ensures future compatibility with Miracast devices as they find their way into homes and businesses.

"Both consumers and professionals want to experience multimedia on the best possible screen," said Dean Chang, president and CEO of Actiontec. "It's no longer acceptable to subject your friends or colleagues to watching your content on a smartphone, tablet or laptop screen when you can beam it to your projector or flat-panel. ScreenBeam is a simple and affordable way to take advantage of the biggest and best screens in your home or office."

Celeno, Atmel demo new set-top, gateway platform

Celeno Communications and Atmel are developing integrated solutions for high-performance Wi-Fi Direct remote controls intended for next-generation set-top box and video gateway platforms.

Leveraging Celeno’s Wi-Fi chipset, the joint solution enables wireless designers to bring their products to market faster, while saving overall system costs and power consumption, according to the companies.

The two companies demonstrated their new set-top box platform at CES. Celeno’s video-grade Wi-Fi is integrated in the set-top box and video gateway for whole-home HD video streaming to multiple devices. Celeno solutions now simultaneously provide a connection to the Atmel-based remote control. Atmel’s ultra-low-power Wi-Fi Direct technology is suited for use in RF remote controls, as it eliminates the need to add additional radio technologies to the host platform.
