Sandvine’s latest-gen Policy Traffic Switch tackles LTE
Sandvine has debuted its Policy Traffic Switch 22000 (PTS 22000) platform. This latest generation is ideal for service edge and aggregation layer deployments, including LTE networks, with up to 20 Gbps performance in a 2RU form factor.

The PTS 22000’s features include:
• A compact form factor with scalable capacity from 10 Gbps to 80 Gbps in a virtual switch cluster, ideal for expanding edge deployments
• Support for up to 5 million subscribers and 32 million concurrent flows, optimal for dynamic multi-session 3G and LTE mobile environments
• High port density, suitable for network edge aggregation, thus reducing required capital expenditure
• True subscriber awareness, even with multiple IP addresses spread across many devices
• Accurate application traffic identification augmented with subscriber, device and location awareness, enabling sophisticated network policy definition
• Integrated policy decision and policy enforcement, providing real-time identification of network conditions and evaluation of business rules for immediate enforcement of policies across multiple or converged access networks.
The PTS 22000 platform, combined with policy control software features, enables service providers to address the challenges of today’s broadband networks, meeting consumers’ diverse application and device usage requirements while managing the tremendous data growth rate.
Envivio upgrades encoder/transcoder
Envivio said the third generation of its encoder/transcoder nearly doubles the processing power of its predecessor and is capable of supporting twice the HD channel density.
In addition to the 4Caster C4 encoder/transcoder Gen III, Envivio has also introduced version 2.4 firmware for the 4Caster C4 family. The new firmware brings numerous enhancements, including support for the new Envivio Genesis output format – a single intermediate mezzanine format that supports multiple bit rates and resolutions.
The new version 2.4 firmware for Envivio 4Caster C4, C42 and Gen III systems features:
• Support for the new Envivio Genesis mezzanine format
• Simultaneous support for both IPTV and OTT outputs compatible with Microsoft Mediaroom 2.0, Silverlight and PlayReady environments
• Enhanced interoperability for cable MSO networks
• Increased input redundancy to maximize availability and reduce operational expenditures
• Fine control over adaptive stream output to enhance quality of experience
• Simplified deployment using native publishing interfaces to major CDNs, including Akamai, Level 3 and Limelight Networks.
The 4Caster C4 encoder/transcoder Gen III has already been deployed in trials at four major operators in the U.S., Europe and Asia, the company said.
L-com touts FME connectors
L-com is now offering low-loss coax cable assemblies featuring FME (For Mobile Equipment) connectors.
These miniature 50 RF connectors allow cables to be snaked through tight access holes or spaces. FME connectors are commonly used in cellular communication devices, as well as low-frequency mobile antenna applications.
The cable assemblies are built with L-com's CA-195 low-loss coax cable. Standard assemblies include FME to FME and FME to BNC.
WooshCom filter streamlines MPEG
WooshCom has devised a filter designed to make MPEG traffic on HFC networks much more bandwidth-efficient.
The company's MPA-1212 filter strips out MPEG Null packets being forwarded onto ASI interconnects within a headend by satellite receivers.
"Typical numbers we are seeing are a 4 Mbps standard-definition video stream being embedded in a 54 Mbps torrent of data, but on some receivers, this deluge is as high as 155 Mbps. It is like trying to drink from a fire hydrant," said Bruce Marler, WooshCom's CTO and founder.
