Looking to expand its server market, Dell is going to attempt to get into the content delivery market with software assists from EdgeCast Networks and Elemental Technologies.
The PC maker formulated Dell Deliver as a means for service providers to deploy content delivery network (CDN) services for the enterprise market, and to do it faster and cheaper than with specialized video processing platforms.
The Dell Deliver system consists of Dell’s PowerEdge servers running CDN software from EdgeCast and Elemental Tech’s multi-screen video processing software.
Dell expects to exploit the typical corporate IT department’s lack of expertise with both delivering vast amounts of traffic and delivering to multiple screens.
“Managing and maintaining a healthy IT infrastructure is getting more and more complicated for network operators as their infrastructures are not designed to support today’s growing demand for IP-based, bandwidth-hogging content,” said Laurie Hutto-Hill, general manager of Dell’s Global Telecommunications, Media and Entertainment organization.

The Dell Deliver system is backed by tiered storage and features streamlined provisioning and a variety of administration and management tools, including analytics, Dell said.
Content is protected by a wide range of advanced security features and supports the leading digital rights management (DRM) solutions, the company said.
Dell servers running software from EdgeCast and Elemental will help service providers target the enterprise market.
