Just because Time Warner Cable and CBS finally found agreement doesn’t mean the broken retransmission consent rules aren’t still wreaking havoc. Cable One has just removed several Turner Network channels – but not all – following the expiration of the Cable One/Turner Network contract.
The day before, Media General blacked out programming from Dish Network subscribers in 18 markets.
With two months to go in the year, TV consumers have already been subjected to 101 blackouts in 2013, versus 91 in 2012 and 51 in 2011, according to the American Television Alliance (ATA).
As of Tuesday morning, Cable One switched off CNN, CNN en Espanol, Headline News, Turner Classic Movies, TruTV, and Boomerang. The service provider did secure rights to TBS, TNT, and the Cartoon Network.
The MSO said its programming costs have gone up 40 percent in the last three years.
"Cable One has been in negotiations to renew our contract with Turner Network for the past several months and we have made every effort to reach a fair deal,” said Cable One CEO Tom Might. “However, Turner has demanded an increase of nearly 50 percent for channels with steadily declining ratings. Since we were unable to reach a fair deal with Turner, we’ve been forced to drop these channels from our channel line-up.”
“The historical video subscription business model is in decline and a new video model is taking shape, built on the Internet and consumer choice,” Might said. “Yet, most cable programmers have chosen to demand unprecedented rate increases in the old model just as it declines. Our customers cannot support these unending, enormous rate increases. More are willing every day to try alternate, less expensive ways, to enjoy video in their homes and on the go.”
Cable One said it will automatically credit its customers for the time the TBS channels are missing. It is also sending customers to the web sites of the TruTV, CNN, and Boomerang to get video from those sources, and suggesting AMC and FX as alternatives to TCM.
