Cox Communications and parent company Cox Enterprises have stepped up to the plate to help customers that were impacted by the tornado that hit the Oklahoma City area on Monday.
The Oklahoma City suburb of Moore was particularly hard hit on Monday with 24 people killed by a tornado that caused an estimated $2 billion in damages, according to the Associated Press.
With numerous power lines down, many residents of the area are without electricity and other services while others are homeless.
Cox Communications was able to secure the programming rights to make its TV Everywhere app, Cox TV Connect, available outside of its customers’ homes for the next 90 days. The app, which provides live streaming of Cox programming from 90 channels on mobile devices, is available to subscribers of Cox TV Essential and Preferred High Speed Internet services for the last two years.
Cox recently announced that Cox TV Connect supported some Android devices , including Amazon's Kindle Fire, Google's Nexus and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 and Note tablets, in addition to the Apple iOS devices that were already supported.
Cox TV Connect users can authenticate themselves with their Cox primary account holder user IDs and passwords.
Cox is also offering free services at two area telecommunications centers in Moore: St. Andrew, which is located at 800 NW 5th St, and Moore Community Center, at 301 N. Broadway. Both locations have Wi-Fi, local and long distance calling and HD TV service.
Cox Enterprises pledged $1 million towards relief and recovery efforts in the communities that were impacted by the recent tornados. The contribution included a $500,000 cash donation to the American Red Cross and $500,000 of in-kind support, including public service announcements.
