Schooled: SCTE launches program to support business services

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers is now offering a training and certification program that was designed to support the rollout of business services offerings by cable operators.

The Business Class Services Specialist (BCSS) course and certification were created to address the need for experienced field technicians who can perform and troubleshoot installations for the business services market.

According to research by Heavy Reading, cable operators were poised to pass the $7 billion revenue mark for business services last year, which was 14 percent higher than 2011. In the third quarter of last year, Time Warner Cable’s business services revenue increased 27 percent year-over-year, while Comcast’s was up 34 percent.

“The intricacies and service assurance demands of business services have created the need for a new category of cable technical professional,” said Steve Harris, senior director of advanced network technologies for SCTE.

“Our Business Class Services Specialist program has been developed in conjunction with operators and vendors to ensure that field technicians have the training they need to provide the highest level of service to this important customer base,” added Pam Nobles, SCTE director of education and certification.

The BCSS certification was custom-designed to describe the knowledge of an experienced field technician who can perform business-level installations for small- to medium-size business-class customers. The course is available in an instructor-led or on-demand online format, or as an onsite course for cable operators’ business services teams. Additional information is available online [1], as well as in an online video [2].

The latest addition to SCTE’s Professional Development portfolio, BCSS is one of nine certifications offered by SCTE. The other certifications comprise BPI (Broadband Premises Installer), BPT (Broadband Premises Technician), BPE (Broadband Premises Expert), BDS (Broadband Distribution Specialist), BTS (Broadband Transport Specialist), BTCS (Broadband Telecom Center Specialist), DVEP (Digital Video Engineering Professional) and IPEP (Internet Protocol Engineering Professional).
