Starting next week, Mediacom Communications will add 43 new HD channels to its lineup in Des Moines and surrounding areas, which will give it more than 100 HD offerings once the channels have been launched.
Mediacom, the nation’s eighth-largest cable operator, said the new HD offerings represented a 74 percent boost to its HD lineup. Mediacom was able to provision the new channels, as well as faster DOCSIS 3.0-enabled data tiers, thanks to its all-digital conversion project that started last year .
“The response to our all-digital upgrade has been incredibly positive, and it’s because consumers understand that they gain much more in the digital world than is otherwise possible,” said Mediacom regional vice president Steve Purcell. “It’s a notable milestone to deliver 100 or more HD channels. This achievement, along with substantial improvements made throughout our network, ensures that we continue to meet the changing video and broadband needs of customers from Des Moines to Mt. Ayr.”
The new HD additions include seven more sports channels and Fox Business HD, all added to a tier of sports and information channels. Premium subscribers will see the arrival of many HD channels from Starz, HBO and Showtime. HD versions of family cable channels are automatically available with no additional programming costs to customers equipped for HDTV. Similarly, HD premium channels or digital tier channels are automatically included in those subscription levels.
The analog-to-digital project covered 16 counties in central and south-central Iowa. Mediacom has also added more HD channels in its Alabama and Florida systems, which also underwent all-digital conversions .
Mediacom has previously said it was using DTAs (digital terminal adapters) from Technicolor for the bandwidth reclamation projects. Since January, Mediacom has distributed more than 98,000 DTAs to customers.
