The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers is laying an educational foundation for the next generation of cable executives through a partnership with Dartmouth's business school.
The SCTE and Tuck Executive Education at Dartmouth provided details today on the SCTE Leadership Institute with Tuck at Dartmouth program. The five-day program, the first of which is slated for April 26-30, will bring together executives from cable operator, vendor and programmer communities for classes that will be taught by the staff of the Tuck School of Business.
Topics for the classes include: "Connecting strategic vision to implementation," "Why smart executives fail" and "Understanding and executing for value creation in broadband services."
"With the transition to IP and the rollout of advanced video, voice and data services, technology and operations executives have become responsible for upwards of 50 percent of capital and operations budgets," said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of the SCTE. "In collaboration with thought leaders from our industry, the faculty at Tuck Executive Education has created a program that will groom technologists to help cable to capitalize on new opportunities and maintain continued market leadership."
The program represents a branching out for the SCTE, whose members tend to be line engineers and lower-rank management.
"This is not an MBA program, it's a leadership program," Dzuban told CED.
The course is aimed at helping engineers learn to succeed as businessmen. It will be focused on engineering, but it will also be designed to demonstrate how to create and execute on budgets.
"The question we need to address is how to fill the gaps in senior-level marketing," Dzuban added.
Applications are now being accepted for the program, which is open to qualified executives in the United States and abroad. Applicants need to be at the director level or above. Applications and a complete curriculum are available on the SCTE's website. 
The application deadline is Feb. 15, and class size is limited.
