Clearwire schedules summer slate of cities for WiMAX

Clearwire announced a slate of markets where it will establish WiMAX service this summer. Clearwire’s parent Sprint and major investors Comcast and Time Warner Cable will also sell access under their own brand names.

Comcast markets in which Clearwire will set up service this summer are Jacksonville and Daytona, Fla.; Kansas City; Nashville; St. Louis; Salt Lake City; Merced, Modesto, Stockton and Visalia, Calif.; Wilmington, Del.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Eugene, Ore.; and Yakima and Tri-Cities, Wash.

Time Warner Cable markets in which Clearwire will set up service this summer include Kansas City, as well as Rochester and Syracuse, N.Y.

Clearwire will set up, and Sprint will resell, Clear in Tampa and Orlando, Fla.

Both of those markets are covered by Bright House Networks, the other MSO investor in Clearwire. This would be the first opportunity for Bright House to resell Clearwire’s WiMAX service.

According to a Bright House spokesman, Bright House “will have the opportunity in the future to resell the service. However, this opportunity and timing is part of Bright House Networks' wireless strategy, which we maintain in confidence given our highly competitive environment.”

Clearwire has previously announced [1] that its Clear service would become available in 2010 in New York City, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Comcast resells the service as Comcast High-Speed 2go, TWC as RoadRunner Mobile and Sprint as Sprint 4G.

Clearwire said Clear is now available in 32 markets covering 41 million people. By the end of 2010, Clearwire's 4G mobile broadband network is expected to be available to up to 120 million people across the United States.
