Faced with keen competition from Verizon, Cablevision announced the launch of nearly 30 new free high-definition channels to its subscribers in Connecticut and New Jersey, and in Long Island and the Hudson Valley area in New York.
All told, Cablevision said it now has more than 100 channels of free HD across its New York metropolitan area footprint. The expansion of HD channels also included more HD services in New York City, which is also being built-out by Verizon.
Approximately 1.6 million of Cablevision’s iO TV digital cable subscribers are taking HD service, an increase of nearly 40 percent from one year ago.
"We launched HD in 2003 with a philosophy that high-definition programming should be available free to our digital cable customers, and more than 100 HD channels later we have held firm to that commitment, with a great and diverse array of programming that includes all HD games of all nine professional sports teams in our market," said John Trierweiler, Cablevision's senior vice president of product management.
The additional HD channels launched include: Big Ten Network HD, Cartoon HD, Turner Classic Movies HD, Planet Green HD, Style HD, Outdoor Channel HD, NBA TV HD, QVC HD, truTV HD, as well as additional HD movie channels from HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz and TMC.
Additionally, Cablevision will launch full-time standard-definition, religious-themed networks Daystar, Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) and Trinity Broadcasting Network in all service areas.
