Sprint is sticking with Amdocs for customer support software and services to back the Q2 launch and continuing operations of its WiMAX network, called Xohm. Sprint began working with Amdocs early in 2006.
Sprint named several other contractors that are supporting Xohm, including SwapDrive , eTelecare Global Solutions and McAfee . Meanwhile, at least two companies are planning on incorporating WiMAX reception in their computers.
Amdocs will be the prime systems integrator responsible for the construction and maintenance of the new mobile portal for Xohm's offerings, as well as for Xohm's ordering, service activation and provisioning, customer relationship management (CRM), and self-service and billing operations.
The portal is intended to be a state-of-the-art affair that will offer Xohm and Xohm partner services and incorporate user registration, identity management, self-service and mobile commerce capabilities.
Sprint has contracted with SwapDrive for a hosted storage solution for Xohm. Xohm subscribers will be able to secure, organize, manage and access all their user-generated digital content though the Xohm portal from any device with a supported browser.
eTelecare Global Solutions is providing voice and e-support customer care services. McAfee will implement online security products for PCs used on the Xohm WiMAX network.
As for the computer companies, OQO , a specialist in mobile personal computing, intends to embed WiMAX wireless capability in an ultra mobile PC (UMPC) in 2008, and Asustek plans to produce a line of WiMAX-embedded devices for availability during 2008.
Zyxel and chip supplier Sequans have announced a collaboration to produce a WiMAX modem subscriber device for mobile Internet data and voice services, which will debut with the launch of commercial Xohm service.
Sprint is testing its WiMAX network in Chicago, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and expects to start offering Xohm services commercially in other U.S. cities - which it has yet to identify - beginning in the second quarter of 2008.
