Ikanos chips in on Sumitomo VDSL2 plans

Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc. (SEN), a Japan-based manufacturer of DSLAMs and other broadband equipment, has selected chipsets from Ikanos Communications Inc. [1] to power a new line of VDSL2 gear.

Under the deal, Sumitomo will leverage Ikanos' Fx100100-5 and Fx100100S-5 chipsets for its VDSL2 central office and consumer premises equipment.

Ikanos, which competes in the sector with the likes of Infineon Technologies, Conexant Systems and Broadcom Corp., recently introduced a fifth-generation line of VDSL2 chipsets that are QoS-optimized for IPTV services. Those chips are considered multi-mode, as they can simultaneously handle different flavors of xDSL, including ADSL, ADSL2 and VDSL1 on a per-port basis.

The chipset Sumitomo selected is optimized for 30 MHz spectrum for symmetrical speeds of 100 Mbps. Another chipset in the Ikanos family utilizes 17.6 MHz spectrum for 100 Mbps downstream, and 50 Mbps upstream.
