The Lightpath division of Cablevision Systems Corp., which provides telephone and high-speed Internet service to commercial customers, is cutting 90 jobs, or one-fifth of its work force, employees have been told.
Lightpath has been cutting staff in recent years as it has upgraded from more traditional, labor-intensive phone networks to Internet-based services, which it provides to about 5,000 businesses in the metropolitan area.
The employees whose positions are being cut have been urged to apply for jobs with Bethpage-based Cablevision's digital cable TV service, Optimum Online residential Internet service and Optimum Voice residential phone service, the company said.
"Cablevision expects a majority of these employees will be able to be redeployed," the company said.
Employees say they have been told the cuts will be made by April 1.
