Charter Communications confirmed an earlier report that the MSO is conducting technical trials of a cable modem tier that caps speeds at 5 Mbps downstream and 512 kbps upstream.
A Charter spokesman said the company is testing the faster tier in some South Carolina and Michigan markets. The company did not say when or if it plans to offer a 5 Mbps residential tier.
Charter's flagship cable modem product caps the downstream at 3 Mbps. The company also markets a "lite" tier that offers 384 kbps down/128 kbps up.
