Eight vendors participate in PacketCable Multimedia interop

The PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM) specification continued to gather steam in the first quarter following the completion of a "successful" three-day interoperability event held at CableLabs' Louisville, Colo. facilities.

Building on DOCSIS, the PCMM architecture defined how cable networks provide guaranteed QoS for a variety of IP-based services and applications, including voice, gaming and video. The the PacketCable 1.x architecture, in comparison, is designed specifically to support carrier-class VoIP services.

"PacketCable Multimedia enables us to add new real-time services in a scalable fashion on top of our DOCSIS and PacketCable platforms," said Steve Craddock, Comcast's executive vice president of Comcast New Media, in a release. "It's a lightweight framework that provides us with enormous capabilities for service management."

CableLabs said eight suppliers participated in the non-certification event. ARRIS, Cisco Systems and Motorola Broadband supplied cable modem termination systems (CMTSs), Camiant, Telcordia and CableMatrix supplied policy servers, and Ellacoya, Syndeo Corp. and Telcordia supplied application managers.

Interoperability events are initial activities designed to see how well various devices from different vendors talk to each other and to determine if new technical requirements are required in the specification. It's expected that CableLabs eventually will conduct official qualification testing against the PCMM specification. CableLabs has yet to provide a timeline for such testing.

CableLabs issued the most recent version of the PCMM spec (PDF file) on June 27, 2003.
