Adelphia Communications Inc. will tap SeaChange International's video-on-demand servers and software to power a new sports-on-demand service.
An extension of its existing MediaCluster VOD platform, SeaChange's network-based personal video recording is designed to allow operators to customize tiers of free, ad-supported on-demand programming.
Adelphia is deploying SeaChange's PVR system following a test earlier this month that featured on-demand access to Buffalo Sabres hockey games. SeaChange's PVR application records live events onto the existing VOD system and delivers them on-demand to digital cable subscribers. Users of the system can exit a recorded program stream to re-join its live broadcast, SeaChange said.
SeaChange rivals such as Concurrent Computer Corp., Diva Systems and nCUBE Corp. also have network PVR products.
Adelphia launched VOD last year in Cleveland, Ohio and Bethel Park, N.Y. In addition to first-run films, the MSO also features subscription-VOD programming from HBO, Showtime and StarzEncore.
