In a direct effort to strengthen its DSL presence, German company Siemens has offered approximately $1.5 billion in cash for Dallas-based Efficient Networks. Efficient Networks' product line includes DSL modems, routers, integrated access devices, supporting voice and data services and management systems and software.
The two companies believe they will be a better market force once they are united, leveraging each other's technologies. Before that happens, the plan must go through the usual regulatory clearances and approvals.
According to Siemens, there is significant potential for continued DSL growth in the future. Market research indicates that worldwide annual shipments of DSL will have increased to more than 50 million units in 2005.
