Scientific-Atlanta and Unisys are blending the two companies' technology to show consumers what VOD can really be. Unisys e-action VOD technology will be combined with S-A's Explorer set-top series and interactive two—"way digital network. S-A is betting this alliance will give it a distinct advantage over DBS systems.
What's different about the Unisys VOD solution? The Unisys servers are running Microsoft Windows 2000, which are engineered to accommodate a large number of input/output channels. These servers can send up to 7,200 concurrent video streams, each in a system designed to accommodate multiple servers with predictable costs per subscriber. And the Unisys technology allows subs to view movies with VCR at any time, around the clock. It also allows many viewers to access the same video at the same time. Good for those box office smash hits.
