There’s been a huge amount of discussion around the need for advanced security for the Internet of Things (IoT), and Cisco is looking to take that on in part with an IoT Threat Defense offering.

The solution includes network segmentation capabilities as well as network behavior analytics, device visibility, remote access, cloud security, malware protection, and firewall services. Cisco said the architecture of its IoT Defense system provides visibility and analysis of traffic to and from IoT devices, as well as traffic entering and exiting the enterprise to detect threats and compromised hosts. It can also reportedly detect anomalies, block threats, identify compromised hosts, and help mitigate user error. Additionally, it can secure remote access between sites and between organizations.

Cisco said the product launch will help meet demands for more IoT security as the segment proliferates to include an estimated 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

Cisco indicated some of the first use cases for its IoT Threat Defense offering are in the advanced medical care, power generation and delivery, and automated manufacturing fields.

Linius Technologies announced a collaboration project with IBM to promote and sell the Linius Video Virtualization Engine (Linius VVE), including building onto the IBM Bluemix platform, to IBM’s network of corporate clients and beyond in Linius’ target market sectors. Together Linius and IBM technology solutions will reportedly enhance Linius VVE with IBM products and then promote and market across four target market sectors: personalized cable/TV advertising, video content anti-piracy, security, and surveillance.

The Linius technology virtualizes videos, exposing the internal data so cable companies can deliver personalized TV ads, while a search engines could begin to return hyper personalized search results from within videos. The collaboration project between Linius Solutions and IBM provides for the joint promotion and marketing of the Linius VVE (including pre-sales support) and submission of proposals for selling the Linius VVE to targeted customers as a stand-alone or integrated offering with IBM products. Linius has been accepted as an IBM Business Partner in PartnerWorld, IBM’s channel program.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced the appointment of Kris Anne Monteith as chief of the Commission’s Wireline Competition Bureau.

Monteith has held several senior leadership positions within the FCC in her 20 years with the agency. She has served as acting chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau as well as chief of the Enforcement Bureau. She has been a deputy chief in the Wireline Competition Bureau she now leads, as well as the Media Bureau and the policy division of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau. Before joining the Commission in 1997, Monteith practiced telecommunications law with McDermott, Will, and Emery and Keller and Heckman in Washington, D.C. 

LS telcom reports it recently completed the nation’s first UAS Broadcast Measurement in Cedar Hill, Texas. The measurement reportedly validated both the horizontal and vertical transmission patterns of a newly installed broadband antenna for a local Dallas TV station. Leveraging the precision flight of the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) combined with a specialized measurement payload, the key data was captured over a two-day period at the Cedar Hill facility this month, as part of the local network’s preparation for the upcoming repack.

With the recent completion of the FCC broadcast incentive auction, more than 900 TV stations across the United States are being repacked to new channel assignments. LS telcom’s UAS Broadcast Measurement reportedly allows broadcasters to capture equipment performance at its source and avoid the lengthy process of drive testing hundreds of square miles to validate basic operation. The measurement data captured can be input into network planning tools for additional analysis, allowing broadcasters to compare the actual transmission patterns of the network with the theoretical projections.
