Nagra, a Kudelski Group company, is displaying anti-piracy services and all-screen user experience solutions at the NAB Show this week. Nagra's anti-piracy services will be co-located with NexGuard at the event. NexGuard watermarking technology reportedly can stop content leaks at their source, whether the content is live or on-demand. Together with the Nagra’s CAS, DRM, and multi-DRM technologies, these form the core of the Nagra Security Services Platform for pay TV content protection.

Nagra will also highlight its OpenTV Suite that reportedly enables pay TV service providers to deliver unified, all-screen viewing experiences on a variety of devices, including operator set-top boxes by SmarDTV as well as streaming devices like Roku and Amazon's FireTV. It offers a cloud-ready backend platform for the delivery of multiscreen TV services with a personalized, operator-branded, and consistent user experience across all major open device platforms, according to the company.

"Nagra's OTT TV solution provides the added benefit of leveraging cloud DVR to enable cost-effective skinny packages with time-shifting features that increase viewer engagement while delivering the convenience and services subscribers have been asking for,” Anthony Smith-Chaigneau, senior director product marketing for Nagra's user experience solutions, says.

At the 2017 NAB Show, Harmonic is offering a 360-degree immersive virtual reality (VR) technology demonstration featuring prerecorded content of Blue Man Group from their stage at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The demo will feature 8K production by Digital Immersion and Tiledmedia's Tiled VR Streaming technology integrated with the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine, Viaccess-Orca's Connected Sentinel Player for secure playback, and Samsung Gear VR headsets. “Through HEVC tiling technology and world-class compression, broadcasters and other content providers can deliver an immersive VR experience to head-mounted devices with the utmost efficiency and video resolution 10 times higher than that offered by existing, commercially deployed VR services,” Harmonic reports in a press release.

Paywizard is debuting enhancements to its Agile solution at NAB in Las Vegas. The company says the new features provide pay TV operators with a true 360-degree, data-driven view of their customers – along with predictive analytics tools that identify individual subscribers’ propensity to churn and then recommend specific actions to retain those at risk. Paywizard’s new partnership with Genius Digital allows pay TV operators using Agile to tap into Genius Digital’s ability to analyze vast amounts of audience data, and they can manage their customer base with more data-driven insight than they previously could. “The joint Genius Digital and Paywizard solution allows operators to leverage a layer of richer, more comprehensive data on subscribers – whether it’s the type of content they watch, the devices they watch it on, or even when they watch – to gain better insights,” Paywizard reports in a statement. “With predictive analytics and the Decision Moments framework, operators are then able to anticipate customer behavior and take the precise, tailored actions in the form of personalized package recommendations that prevent customer defections and improve average revenue per user.”

Paywizard also announced that Cisco revealed the company as the latest vendor to integrate its solution into Cisco’s Infinite Video Platform, which is said to allow pay TV service providers to create personalized viewing experiences across an array of devices, while reducing the cost of delivery per subscriber. Integrating the Paywizard Agile solution will allow operators to use Agile’s DecisionMoments Dashboard to track the progress of subscribers through each stage of their customer journey, using insights to precisely guide service entitlement and marketing promotions and offers.

Verimatrix is showcasing its Standalone VideoMark and StreamMark solutions at its NAB 2017 booth. The VideoMark solution is now offered in a configuration independent of VCAS to provide operators with greater flexibility as they build their multi-layered security platform for premium content services. Also a core component of Verimatrix’s next-generation VCAS Ultra platform, the Standalone VideoMark solution extends Verimatrix’s video tracking and forensic identification capabilities to work alongside third-party conditional access (CA) and digital rights management (DRM) systems, according to the company.

StreamMark, Verimatrix’s server-side forensic watermarking solution, has also been expanded to protect premium content delivered via HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and standard DASH ABR formats to enable early release windows and other premium content business models. The company says the solution is inherently DRM-agnostic and integrates with leading encoder and CDN components to protect unicast over-the-top (OTT) delivery by uniquely marking compressed video files, even if they are encrypted.

VideoMark reportedly delivers seamless integration through the extended value of pre-integrated set-top box and smart TV manufacturers and chipset vendors, including Samsung, Broadcom, MStar, HiSilicon, Mediatek, Telechips, Marvel, Amlogic, RealTek, and ALi. The deployment of VideoMark’s watermarking and extraction capabilities can now be streamlined through the pre-integration of the ViewRight Secure Player on compatible OTT client devices, according to Verimatrix.

Ericsson is focusing on media enrichment, media processing and delivery, and media publishing at NAB 2017. The company will demonstrate how software, cloud services, global platforms, data-driven outcomes, and intuitive and immersive experiences are enabling all providers to differentiate and compete in the new era of television.

Ericsson is debuting its dynamic ad insertion solution for over-the-top (OTT) streaming, Ericsson MediaFirst Stream Personalization, which is said to provide content uniquely tailored to an individual. It can work across multiple formats and with any player, offering the capability to insert ads in HLS, Smooth Streaming, and MPEG-DASH. In addition to performing frame-accurate ad insertion and content replacement from the network, MediaFirst Stream Personalization offers usage logs, which, when coupled with analytics, reportedly enables a deeper understanding of audiences and more accurate business intelligence.

Also featured at the Ericsson display will be Snap Captions, Subito Vault, and Subito Conversion and Delivery Engine. The company says Snap Captions is its fastest-ever offline captioning service. Subito Vault is a single, globally accessible, integrated caption production toolkit that enables cloud-based captioning workflow management, secure management of caption and proxy media files, and a complete caption file archive delivered with a client-facing API. The Subito Conversion and Delivery Engine takes broadcast caption files and automatically combines, offsets, and converts them for optimum cross-platform output and delivery. Formats currently supported include SMPTE-TT, SAMI, TTML, EBU-TT, SRT, iTunesTT, and others.

Ericson’s booth will also highlight advancements in immersive multi-TV VR and 8K 360-degree video experiences, enabled by the company’s media processing and delivery technologies. It also will show a solution for the integration of IoT devices with the Ericsson MediaFirst TV Platform, which uses the TV interface as the control center of the smart home. Another solution featured at the company’s display is AR sports graphics that are said to enrich viewers’ experiences with additional data.

Edgeware will launch an enhancement to its TV CDN architecture at the NAB Show, allowing its customers to repackage and re-encrypt TV content at the edge of their TV CDN. The Edge TV Repackager product enables distribution and caching of TV content in a single common file format, then repackages it on-the-fly, into DASH, HLS or MSS formats, for example, as required by the client device. This will reportedly reduce the backhaul bandwidth and the amount of NAS and cache storage required for most VOD services by a factor of two to three.

“Reducing the strain on network and storage is especially important as viewers begin to adopt 4K TV,” Edgeware CTO Göran Appelquist notes. “Edge repackaging will offset the higher requirements for network and storage capacity required by UHD services. It’s another benefit of building your own TV CDN, rather than buying a standard third-party CDN service. With a CDN optimized for TV, operators and content owners can retain the savings in delivery bandwidth and storage, rather than simply paying for more and more bytes to be delivered every month.”

Distributing the repackaging function to the edge of a TV CDN also improves the viewing experience, according to Edgeware. The company says network capacity is less congested because only a single format of the content needs to be delivered, with the additional benefit of extra available caching memory, freed up by saving files in one format, which improves the cache hit ratio, all leading to even less chance of buffering.
