According to a recent report, 2013 was a banner year for the Ethernet switch market.
The Layer 2-3 Ethernet Switch market exceeded $22 billion last year, with most segments achieving record revenues during the year, according to the report by Dell’Oro Group.
“Cloud providers’ insatiable demand for network equipment and strong growth in enterprise data centers contributed to the majority of the revenue increase we saw in the Ethernet Switch market,” said Alan Weckel, vice president of Ethernet switch market research at Dell’Oro Group. “White box switching continued to gain momentum in 2013, especially among the mega cloud providers, outperforming the overall market, albeit from a smaller base.
“Sales into enterprise customers also outpaced the market overall with many vendors in this segment achieving record years. Although we expect the impact of the cloud and the emergence of local vendors in China to weigh heavily on the market and individual vendor performance throughout the year, nevertheless we anticipate overall market growth will continue in 2014."
The report also reported that a record number of vendors exceeded $400 million last year, including Cisco Systems, Dell, Extreme Networks (including Enterasys Networks), Hewlett-Packard, Huawei, and Juniper Networks.
