Intel is reported to be in talks to sell the unit that has been trying to build an over the top (OTT) service to Verizon. All Things Digital said that people familiar with the talks said the two companies are in advanced negotiations.
Intel and Verizon declined to comment.
Intel was known to be interested in developing a web-based television service, but the move put the company in an awkward position. One division sells semiconductors used in to make cable modems and set-tops for the cable industry, while another division, Intel Media, was trying to become a direct competitor to MSOs.
Recent media reports have speculated that the company was having a difficult time lining up a slate of top-tier programmers willing to license the rights to their content.
For Intel, this would be yet another in a long string of failures to create a direct path into the consumer market.
The value for Verizon could be Intel Media’s work with user interfaces.
