Fueled by a $1 million personal donation in honor of cable industry icon John Malone, The Cable Center announced it had named its theater the John Malone Theater at The Cable Center.

Mike Fries, president and CEO, Liberty Global, Inc.; Greg Maffei, president and CEO, Liberty Media Corporation; and David Zaslav, president and CEO, Discovery Communications, provided the naming gift. The theater will be dedicated during a special celebration on Sept. 7 at The Cable Center.

“The naming of this theater in honor of John Malone is a small token of our appreciation for all that he has done for us in our careers, as well as for the industry as a whole,” Fries, Maffei and Zaslav said in a joint statement. “Over 40 years, John has played a leading role in building the infrastructure, programming services and companies that today deliver television and high-speed Internet to the majority of Americans, and an increasing proportion of European consumers.  Without John Malone, there would be no cable industry as we know it, and we are forever in debt to his vision, perseverance and dedication.”

Based in Denver, The Cable Center had briefly named the same theater the Rigas Theater in honor of Adelphia CEO and founder John Rigas many years ago, but the naming commitment was never fulfilled, and Rigas, along with one of his sons, was later sentenced to prison.

Denver was Malone’s old stomping ground after Bob Magness hired him at Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) in 1973. In 1999, helped broker one of the largest transactions in U.S. corporate history by merging TCI with AT&T Corp. AT&T subsequently sold most of those assets to Comcast in 1998.

Malone has been chairman of Liberty Media Corporation since 1990, and also the chairman of Liberty Global, Inc. (LGI) since 2005.  He currently serves on the board of directors for CATO Institute, Expedia, Inc., Discovery Communications, Inc., and SiriusXM, and is chairman emeritus of the Board for Cable Television Laboratories Malone was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame in 1999.

“We are extremely appreciative to Mike, Greg and David for this generous gift, and thrilled to dedicate the John Malone Theater at The Cable Center,” said Larry Satkowiak, president and chief executive officer of The Cable Center.  “John Malone has helped to build cable into the thriving, innovative and intriguing industry it is today, and we are pleased to be able to honor him with this special recognition.”

The John Malone Theater at The Cable Center is a state-of-the-art space that seats 200 and hosts a variety of events, including presentations, screenings, panel discussions and lectures.
