Comcast's Freedom Region, which serves 2.1 million customers in greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and northern Delaware, has completed the launch of Xfinity Home across its entire footprint.

Comcast said about 650 communities within the Freedom Region now have access to its home security and automation service, which was first launched in Houston in 2010.

Xfinity Home Security offers traditional home security components, such as police and fire alarm protection, as well as the ability to adjust digital thermostats, turn lights on or off, and watch secure live streaming video from wireless cameras while away from home. The broadband-based service also comes with an Xfinity Security app, which is available for free on Apple's iTunes App Store.

"We see many benefits in having Xfinity Home available to all areas we serve," said LeAnn Talbot, senior vice president of the Freedom Region. "We know from direct feedback and surveys that our customers want a home monitoring service from Comcast, and our ability to market the product widely will go a long way in boosting awareness and adoption."

Xfinity Home Security gives users the ability to create personalized settings that can do things such as provide real-time email or text alerts when doors open or close or when motion detectors report activity occurring inside or outside of the home. In addition, the service comes with a tablet-like touchscreen with a menu of widgets that allow access to the latest weather, news, traffic and sports scores.

The Xfinity Home Security Preferred Package starts at $39.95 per month with an additional installation fee. Comcast said Xfinity Home Security customers would also be eligible to receive up to a 20 percent discount on their home insurance.

Xfinity Home was also recently launched in the Denver area, and during yesterday's fourth-quarter earnings call, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said the service would be available in "many, many markets virtually nationwide," as transcribed by Seeking Alpha.

Time Warner Cable has its home automation service offering, which it calls IntelligentHome, deployed in five cities, with more launches slated for this year.

According to a recent report, home automation is a growing business for cable operators because it brings in incremental revenues and helps reduce subscriber churn.
