Canoe Ventures is using Dublin, Ireland-based S3 Group's StormTest Development Center to test its EBIF apps across multiple set-top box environments.

With the StormTest Development Center, S3 Group said Canoe Ventures can now test multiple set-top boxes from multiple vendors across different operator networks, and from one single testing platform. Canoe Ventures, which is backed by the six largest cable operators in the nation, currently has its EBIF-based request for information (RFI) campaign in front of more than 20 million cable households, with Comcast accounting for a large chunk of that number.

Canoe Ventures is working on other iTV applications, including polling and trivia apps that are slated to launch later this year.

Canoe Ventures needs to test and validate its new iTV apps across various platforms and cable operator footprints, and by working with S3 Group, it's able to streamline the process. Canoe Ventures officially became a company in 2008, with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision and Bright House Networks as its investors.

S3 Group said its StormTest Development Center has been chosen by more than 20 of the world's leading digital TV operators, broadcasters and vendors. It allows automated testing to be carried out more efficiently and effectively by testing multiple devices for interactive applications, embedded firmware and digital TV solutions simultaneously. It also has enterprise features, such as centralized resource management, where testing slots can be pooled across systems and sites, as well as centralized reporting and results management.

"Canoe is committed to delivering the highest-quality iTV experiences to viewers, networks, advertisers and cable distributors. This requires accuracy, consistency and trustworthy performance," said Tom Huber, vice president of release engineering at Canoe Ventures. "We compared several automated testing solutions before selecting S3 Group. S3 Group and its StormTest Development Center are best suited for our complex environment, including the testing of multiple MSO set-top boxes in-market and available today. We determined that its ability to support multiple devices and operator footprints, combined with the professional services available from the S3 Group team, made them the right choice for automated testing at Canoe."

Separately, Canoe Ventures is also gearing up for a launch next year of dynamic ad insertion in free VOD.
