RGB Networks introduced a multi-purpose transcoding server aimed specifically at enabling the delivery of live and on-demand programming to mobile devices.

The Application Media Server (AMS) is based on the V6 product from RipCode, which was recently acquired by RGB.

The AMS is a transcoding and transport packaging appliance that supports file-based on-demand transcoding (ODT), live-stream processing and file-to-file transcoding, which are key to processing programs into the codecs required for mobile, Internet and IPTV video. 

RGB claims the AMS is unique in its ability to support integrated adaptive streaming and progressive download, along with smartphone delivery protocols.

"Smartphones and other mobile devices present an immense challenge for operators delivering video, largely because of the vast number of codecs and protocols supported across devices," said Ramin Farassat, vice president of product marketing for RGB Networks.

The AMS can be deployed as a standalone server; it can be clustered for high availability and load balancing, scaling to thousands of concurrent transcodes.

It can also work in conjunction with RGB's Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG), the company's a high-capacity transcoder with integrated SCTE 30/35 live ad insertion capabilities. 

The VMG is highly suitable for scalable live stream transcoding, while the AMS can concurrently handle ODT requests.

This combination of VMG and AMS creates an interesting alternative architecture for content delivery. The distributed transcoder/packager architecture leverages scalable IP multicast networks in the core network and HTTP or streaming content delivery network (CDN) architecture at the edge, giving operators a flexible transition path to a TV Everywhere environment, RGB explained.
