StarHub of Singapore, an early adopter of DOCSIS-based channel bonding, has joined CableLabs, the cable industry's primary R&D house.

StarHub is the second Asian MSO to join the CableLabs ranks. Liberty Global, which is tied to J:COM of Japan and other international operators, was the first CableLabs member to have cable operations in the Asia region.

"CableLabs has been instrumental in helping us with our nationwide deployment of pre-DOCSIS 3.0 broadband service in Singapore to assure continued competitive leadership in our market," said Thomas Ee, SVP of StarHub's IP services. He noted that the MSO is ramping up to offer a 1 Gbps service "over the next few years" using DOCSIS 3.0.

StarHub has about 300,000 residential broadband customers. The MSO has already introduced pre-DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem termination systems and modems from Motorola Inc. to produce a service that caps downstream speeds at about 100 Mbps.
