Netgear announced the availability of its 200 Mbps Powerline HD Ethernet adapter and kit, aimed at distributing HD video and networked games in a powerline-based home network. Netgear's adapter is based on 200 Mbps technology from DS2.
The Powerline HD Ethernet adapter enables consumers to connect a personal computer, DVR, game console or other Ethernet-ready device to their home network without the need to run any cabling between rooms. It will also carry VoIP services throughout the home.
Netgear's Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter offers built-in video quality of service (VQoS) for consistent performance, with encrypted security. The VQoS feature ensures that video and gaming traffic are prioritized so that HD video streams are free of interruption from others using the network.
The new adapter co-exists with other Powerline technologies, so that consumers could use their existing, slower units for basic applications, and the 200 Mbps unit as an exclusive network loop for high-definition video and gaming. A kit containing two devices has an MSRP of $249.99.
