German vendor Siemens has been selected by cable group UPC Broadband as its supplier of VoIP technology. UPC Broadband is planning to deploy VoIP services across its networks in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Siemens will provide its VoIP technology based on the so-called voice over cable network solution.

Significance: UPC Broadband, a subsidiary of U.S.-based cable giant Liberty Global, will offer triple-play services such as TV, broadband Internet access and VoIP. Last year, UPC Broadband expanded into Romania following its acquisition of Astral Telecom - Romania's second-largest cable provider. Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), where UGC Broadband currently generates its strongest revenue and operating cash-flow growth, is the subsidiary's key region.
