Octalica Ltd. has become the second silicon supplier to join the Multimedia over Coax Alliance, a group behind a coax-based home networking scheme that supports theoretical throughputs as high as 270 Mbps.
Entropic Communications had served as the Alliance's sole chip supplier since MoCA's official coming out party in early 2004. Comcast Corp. and EchoStar Communications are among MoCA's other founding members.
With membership, Israel-based Octalica is in line to license the necessary patents tied to MoCA.
"Octalica's membership is a welcome event as additional chip vendors will help proliferate the MoCA standard and drive down costs for OEMs, service providers and the end consumer," said MoCA President Ladd Wardani, who also serves as vice president of business development at Entropic.
