Leading Swiss cable operator Cablecom has launched a prepaid mobile service through an MVNO arrangement with Sunrise, the TDC-owned Swiss operator.

Cablecom is expected to launch further services in the first half of 2006, but it has become the first operator in Switzerland to offer quadruple-play services.

Significance: Cablecom has said that its mobile service will be some 20% cheaper than competitors' offerings. This suggests that it is targeting the low end of the market, which is unlikely to be the tier most interested in buying bundled voice, broadband and video offerings. However, Cablecom has indicated that in the longer term, it will provide a fixed-to-mobile convergence service akin to that offered by BT.
