Banking on a philosophy that one is sometimes better than many, Texas Instruments Inc. has added wireless local area networking capability to its voice-over-cable platform via a single gateway.
Available now to electronics manufacturers, the TNETC731 VoCable gateway melds high-speed data, voice and home networking features, and it is the first gateway to support all of CableLabs' PacketCable 1.5 requirements. That will allow cable operators to support voice quality monitoring, T.38 fax relay and battery backup to support lifeline communications services.
For subscribers, that will offer wired and wireless data, but also wired or wireless phone service using a cordless voice-over-IP handset. The gateway software, meanwhile, can also be configured to support future dual-mode Wi-Fi-cellular phone services. An optional version adds CableHome capabilities including network address translation/firewall and advanced routing through a partnership with Ashley Laurent.
"TI's extensive broadband and residential gateway expertise enables us to offer the most complete and advanced solution in a single platform, so our customers can meet and exceed service providers' needs for a differentiated and easy-to-deploy gateway," said Irvind Ghai, director of worldwide marketing for TI's cable group.
