The deal marks Coaxsys' first announced set-top integration deal. Although its TVnet is supported by more than 50 telcos, cable operators and other service providers (Hargray Communications, Consolidated Communications and Panhandle Telephone, among them), the technology has been deployed in adapter form.
Atlanta-based ConFocus produces set-top client software and custom drivers for manufacturers and chip providers. It will couple TVnet with its FocusWare client, and market the combo to set-top vendors. The first reference implementations will become available in 2006, the companies said.
Designed to support speeds of 100 Mbps, TVnet is used today by IPTV providers to deliver services to multiple outlets and devices via existing coax lines. The platform competes with the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA), which has backing from large service providers such as Comcast Corp. and EchoStar Communications.
