Microsoft Corp. is putting money behind a new Internet-based video-on-demand (VOD) service aimed at the Japanese market.

Running the show is CinemaNow Inc., which created a Japanese subsidiary (CinemaNow Japan Inc.) in partnership with Transcosmos Inc.

The new subsidiary, already available on the Web with 170 titles, will also seek partnerships with Japanese consumer electronics companies, broadband service providers and "portal partners."

The Japan-centric service "represents a significant step forward in CinemaNow's efforts to offer a rich, innovative entertainment experience to a global market," said CinemaNow CEO Curt Marvis.
