Comcast Cable on Monday formally launched the upstart NFL Network, and is complementing the 24/7 network with on-demand access to game highlights and titles from the NFL Films vault.
Some Comcast digital customers found over the weekend that the MSO had already made some NFL Network content available, including highlights of the Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots game played last Thursday. Customers also discovered that Comcast will observe strict NFL blackout rules. VOD access to NFL Network content was shut down during the games Sunday.
Under the deal, Comcast will offer on-demand access to all NFL games in condensed form (8–20 minutes), plus two in high-definition format.
Initially, Comcast has launched NFL Network in markets such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, Seattle and Washington, D.C. The MSO also expects to launch the channel in Chicago, Nashville, and systems it operates in California in the coming weeks.
