The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP) as a standard.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers submitted the middleware standard, internally called SCTE 90-1 2004.

OCAP — a middleware for OpenCable "hosts" such as set-tops and televisions, as well as a possible component of a two-way Plug & Play agreement for set-top free digital televisions — got its start as a specification under the auspices of CableLabs.

The approval "provides an additional indication tot the cable, programming and manufacturing industries that OCAP is the accepted, stable, standard for interactive cable devices," said CableLabs President & CEO Dr. Richard Green, in a release.
