BigBand Networks has formally added support for PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) for its flagship Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR).
BigBand said it is supporting PSIP, a standard for delivering program information and enhanced features, ahead of the FCC's mandatory deployment deadline of July 1, 2004. PSIP provides data ranging from channel locations, program descriptions, closed captioning and V-Chip controls.
The vendor noted that several cable operators have already deployed PSIP functionality with BigBand's grooming and HD applications for the BMR. Operators can provide PSIP support in existing BMRs via a software upgrade, BigBand said. Once upgraded, the equipment can extract data tables from local broadcast sources, regenerate them for cable carriage, and modulate them in-band.
