Level 3 Communications said it will launch two residential VoIP services to more than 300 U.S. markets by the end of 2004.
The company expects to begin service in some markets by the second quarter. The services are respectively called (3)VoIP Enhanced Local and HomeTone.
Level 3 will market the "Enhanced" version of the product to cable operators, IXCs and other operators looking to offer residential voice services but prefer to use their own switching infrastructure. Under the model, Level 3 will provide local phone numbers, interconnections with the traditional telephony network, local number portability and E911 services.
Level 3's HomeTone service takes a turnkey, hosted approach, offering the functions of "Enhanced," plus calling features such as voice mail, call waiting and three-way conferencing. Level 3 said it will market the HomeTone product to ISPs and cable operators.
