Wave Broadband has selected BigBand Networks' flagship Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR) and high-definition television application to support the rollout of HD services. Wave Broadband serves about 50,000 customers in western Washington.
The deployment will also tap BigBand's RateShaping technology, which is designed to provide a 50 percent bandwidth gain while maintaining video quality. Wave is using the equipment to multiplex three HDTV feeds on to one 6 MHz channel.
"Bandwidth is our most valuable resource, and by deploying [BigBand's technology], we conserve spectrum that can support additional services such as VOD and switched broadcast," said Wave Broadband CEO Steven Weed, in a release.
