Following a recent decision to add Scientific-Atlanta Inc. headends and set-tops to its digital mix, Cablevision Systems Corp. said it will activate nearly 1 million new digital homes and pass more than 3.3 million households with its iO: Interactive Optimum digital service by the end of November.

The MSO said it will reach that figure after completing more than 750,000 activations during the month of October and nudging closer to completing its two-way plant upgrade.

Cablevision said it will continue to complement its iO service with video-on-demand, and feature as many as 700 pay, subscription and "free" on-demand titles at any given time.

In late August, Cablevision named S-A as its second supplier of digital headends and set-top boxes. Sony Corp. was the first. Instead of using S-A's embedded and proprietary PowerKey conditional access technology, however, the MSO has said it plans to continue to use the existing system from NDS Group.
