Movielink, a broadband-based video-on-demand service that could sap some VOD and pay-per-view revenues from cable operators, is set to launch this December.

The service, a joint venture of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., will tap IBM to power its Web site development, systems operations and network management.

Although Movielink users will require a steady bandwidth stream to render the content, the IBM partnership "ensures that [Movielink's] on-demand infrastructure is built on a rock-solid foundation," Movielink CEO Jim Ramo said.
