Personal Video Recorder (PVR) technologies are certainly something consumers have shown an interest in having, but sluggish sales and general consumer malaise have plagued the market for time-shifted television viewing so far.
Part of that slow growth can be attributed to an undefined strategy of exactly how to sell the box and provide the service.
SONICblue, which makes the ReplayTV line of PVR/DVR products, is again tweaking its service strategy and has announced a new service-based pricing model for ReplayTV going forward. Beginning with the forthcoming ReplayTV 4500 series, the company will separate service subscription rates from the retail price of the box. The new service-pricing model won't affect current ReplayTV 4000 or prior offerings, which will continue to include a lifetime service subscription with purchase of the system.
