Conexant Systems has launched the CX24430, a set-top box chip that combines a cable modem and an MPEG decoder for interactive cable applications.
In addition to digital set-tops, the chip could also be deployed in broadband home gateways and other advanced interactive cable devices. The full function CX24430 targets the worldwide cable market and goes for $37 per unit in volume. Other versions include the CX24432, which is for Europe and doesn't provide PVR support, and CX24436, a broadcast-only model that sells for about $23 apiece.
"We wanted a solution that could attack different market opportunities," said Anthony Simon, Conexant's director of cable set-top box products.
Conexant said its CX24430 chip family is available in samples today, and expects to ramp up production during the second half of 2002.
