Scientific-Atlanta just shipped its six millionth Explorer advanced digital set-top box. The recipient: S-A's long-time partner Time-Warner Communications in Orlando.
S-A sent the Explorer 2100 to TWC to commemorate the cable company's decade of work in ITV. The first interactive TV trial in Orlando eight years ago led to today's burgeoning market, S-A says.
The company says as many as 27.3 million cable households will have access to ITV by 2005.
S-A, considered No. 2 in the set-top box market, sent the commemorative box as part of a six-month-long celebration of its 50th anniversary. The company was founded with $600 in seed funding in October 1951 by six Georgia Tech grads. Now, it boasts more than $2 billion in annual sales and more than 11,000 employees.
