Scientific-Atlanta is finding an appetite for the personal video recorder game. The company is enhancing its digital set-tops, the Explorer 8000 series, with preference engine and intelligent storage management software from Metabyte.
The software will learn what subscribers like to watch on TV and will make recommendations to viewers as well as record preferred programs. Metabyte's software can also recommend the type of advertising viewers might most like to see. (Hurrah! A way to filter out those annoying "Mentos" commercials!)

Some of the revenue opportunities the companies hope this represents for cable companies are better subscriber satisfaction and penetration, lower churn and higher rates for custom advertising.
