BarcoNet said it will develop a line of IP-based products to distribute on-demand entertainment video over an IP backbone. Path 1 Network Technologies (www.Path1.net.)will work with BarcoNet to develop an IP gateway product using a new Gigabit Ethernet platform. The company hopes the alliance strengthens BarcoNet's position in the industry transition from traditional communication networks to broadband networks that can offer digital TV, VOD and e-commerce services.
"The BarcoNet/Path 1 gateway allows up to 90 3.3 -megabit per second MPEG channels to route simultaneously through one IP link," said Michael T. Elliott Ph.D., president and CEO of Path 1, in a statement. "The unit multiplexes three or four independent multiple program MPEG streams from a single IP stream. This should allow for more flexible traffic routing, especially during peak demand periods."
BarcoNet will pay a non-recurring fee of $1.7 million. In return, Path 1 will develop, test and deliver beta units to BarcoNet over the next six months, which will manufacture and sell the products. The companies have also agreed to a royalty and resell agreement, including the option for Path 1 to purchase and resell the BarcoNet product under the Path 1 label. BarcoNet expects the first products to become available in Q4 2001. In separate BarcoNet news, the company has appointed NO SALUTATION Nick (LAST NAME?) to COO. In his new position,Fielibert will be responsible for marketing, development, sales and manufacturing of all product lines worldwide.
