The HEVC standard has the potential to have a revolutionary impact on video delivery, as it will dramatically reduce the bandwidth compared to existing H.264 delivery systems. This paper examines what HEVC is and reviews the development of the standard, how past and current compression standards are extended by HEVC, and which applications will benefit.
