AT&T said it has attracted a half-dozen developers to AT&T Drive, the company’s program to support the adaptation of mobile apps for use in connected vehicles. AT&T set up the program to give automakers a selection of services and capabilities to include in their connected vehicles.

Brightstar CEO Marcelo Claure will take over as President and CEO at Sprint. Claure founded Brightstar, a wireless distribution company, and earlier this year sold a majority stake to SoftBank for $1.26 billion. After the sale he joined the board at Sprint, also owned by SoftBank.

Time Warner Cable CEO Rob Marcus outlined several of the company’s top priorities during this morning’s second quarter earnings call, which included the announcement that seven cities are slated to receive TWC Maxx network upgrades next year. TWC Maxx, which features 300 Mbps on the downstream, will touch down in Charlotte, Dallas, Hawaii, Kansas City, Raleigh, San Antonio and San Diego.
Rhapsody International Inc. said Tuesday its partnership with T-Mobile US Inc. has helped boost its number of paying subscribers to more than 2 million, up from 1.7 million in April. Last month, Rhapsody teamed up with the nation's fourth-largest carrier on a new service called unRadio. It allows users to stream randomly generated songs along a genre, artist or song name without ads.

AT&T said it added 488,000 high speed Internet subscribers, including 55,000 business customers. The company said it also added 190,000 U-verse TV subscribers, for a new total of 5.9 million. That’s roughly on par with the number of adds in the last few quarters.
In the second quarter earnigns report this morning, tablets helped Verizon's bottom line as it added 304,000 postpaid phone net additions and 1.15 million postpaid tablets. On the FiOS side, Verizon posted subscriber gains across its video, data and phone services.
Google and a number of partner companies may be looking to transform New York City pay phones into Wi-Fi hotspots, according to a report from Bloomberg. New York is accepting proposals from interested parties willing to install, operate and maintain up to 10,000 “Public Communications Structures providing advertising, Wi-Fi, and phone service in all five boroughs.”
Ericsson today posted a second quarter profit of $394 million despite curtailing LTE rollouts by major North American carriers. Revenue for the quarter came in at just over $8 billion, which beat analyst expectations. In a press release, the Swedish equipment maker said sales in the quarter were mainly driven by continued capacity projects in North America and growth in the Middle East, China and India.
Shaw Communications has reached out to the CableWiFi alliance to express its interest in becoming a peer to the consortium in Canada. If Shaw gains entry, it would add its 40,000 hotspots, which are spread throughout Western Canada between Victoria and Sault Ste. Marie, to CableWiFi’s more than 250,000 access points that are located across the U.S.
