After first deploying the service in Tampa Bay and Central Florida last summer, Bright House Networks has rolled out its “Echo” Wi-Fi offering, which was designed to fill-in Wi-Fi dead spots within a home, across its footprint. The Echo access points are supplied by Actiontec Electronics while Entropic provides the MoCA silicon for both the Arris modems and hotspots.

This month Cox Communications has added 1,700 Wi-Fi hotspots for its subscribers to log into in Phoenix and Las Vegas. Dish said it is integrating Netflix into its service, available as an app to customers who have a second-generation Hopper DVR. Time Warner Cable and Boingo are laying claim to being the first companies in the world to launch a reciprocal Passpoint-based roaming network for their customers. The two companies announced a bilateral Wi-Fi roaming deal back in June and said then that they would complete a Passpoint-enabled integration later this year.

Anchorage-based Alaska Communications announced plans Thursday to sell its remaining wireless assets in the state to General Communication Inc. (GCI) to help pay down debt and focus on its growing broadband business. The sale, for $300 million, includes Alaska Communications' wireless subscriber base and its 33 percent interest in a partnership between the companies known as The Alaska Wireless Network LLC.
DirecTV became the first MVPD to announce plans to offer 4K content on demand, sometime in 2015. The satellite broadcaster will be using Elemental Server, a file-based transcoding solution, to prepare Ultra HD content for delivery. Elemental tweaked its HEVC algorithms so DirecTV didn't have to take a hit on bandwidth usage.

The Wireless Broadband Alliance's annual survey reported that 70 percent of the respondents said their main motivation for deploying carrier grade Wi-Fi in their systems was to improve the customer experience and increase subscriber retention. Vodafone is evaluating the possibility of a merger with or acquisition of Liberty Global, according to reports quoting unnamed Vodafone insiders. UTStarcom is targeting the North American cable operator market with its system for offloading wireless traffic onto a Wi-Fi network. The solution, in use for over a year in other markets, includes a carrier class Wi-Fi AC which supports more than 120,000 access points and over 1.3 million subscribers within a single chassis.
The FCC announced it has worked out an agreement with T-Mobile to ensure the carrier’s customers get accurate mobile broadband speed test readings even after they’ve been throttled. T-Mobile last summer began exempting data speed tests from impacting customers’ data caps, but speed tests under that program displayed full network speeds even if the customer is being throttled back to 128 Kbps or 64 Kbps.
