Samsung’s Q4 profits jump 76% on Galaxy sales

A doubling of profits from Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones boosted the company's overall fourth quarter profits by nearly 76 percent over the previous quarter. Samsung recorded net profits for the fourth quarter of $6.6 billion, a 76 percent surge from $3.72 billion during the same period last year.

Metaswitch gives voice to Global Xpress

Inmarsat will use VoIP equipment from Metaswitch to provide the telephony element of its Global Xpress worldwide communication service. Metaswitch is supplying Inmarsat with its Universal Media Gateways, MetaSphere server, MetaView system and Perimeta session border controllers.

Report: Mobile data traffic doubles, speeds rise

Apple earnings, guidance disappoint; stock plummets 10%

Investors weren't impressed with what Apple had to say in its fiscal first-quarter earnings call. Shares fell more than 10 percent to $460 in aftermarket trading on lowball guidance and a rare dip in quarterly profits, as well as diminishing margins.

Cisco to acquire mobile start-up Intucell

Cisco announced plans to buy Israeli company Intucell for approximately $475 million in cash and retention-based incentives. Intucell provides self-optimizing network (SON) software to mobile carriers, and it allows them to plan, configure, manage, optimize and heal cellular networks automatically.

Report: LTE subscribers will hit 198M in 2013

The number of LTE subscribers is set to more than double in 2013, according to a forecast released from IHS iSuppli. According to the report, worldwide LTE subscribers will surpass 198.1 million in 2013, a 115 percent increase from the 92.3 million last year.

Verizon posts record Q4 loss on pension adjustment

Verizon strengthened its position as the top dog of the wireless industry in its latest quarter by raking in new subscribers and selling millions of iPhones, but it also posted a record loss. The loss of $4.23 billion, or $1.48 per share, for the fourth quarter was mainly due to adjustments to the value of its pension funds and obligations.

AT&T agrees to buy Atlantic Tele-Network for $780M

AT&T announced that it has signed an agreement to buy Atlantic Tele-Network (ATNI) to acquire the company’s U.S. retail wireless operations, operated under the Alltel brand, for $780 million in cash. AT&T will acquire wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, retail stores and approximately 585,000 subscribers.
